“He Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had set up a slaughterhouse for large and small animals Kondhwa. “The slaughterhouse needs improvement for which the World Bank has sanctioned Rs 9.77 crore to the civic body.” said municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram.
The civic body appointed Mitcon Consultancy and Engineering Services Ltd as consultant for the project. The reconstruction of the slaughterhouse will be carried out according to the standards of the Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) of the World Bank. “The World Bank is in favor of additional expenditure for the slaughterhouse reconstruction project as per norms. It was approved by the World Bank as the proposal was submitted through SMART,” he said. SMART is the unit of Balasaheb Thackeray’s Agribusiness and Rural Transformation project, owned by the state government.
Consultant Mitcon has conveyed that the estimated cost of the project is Rs 8.70 crore, excluding 18 per cent GST. The proposal also includes an expenditure of Rs 21 lakh for demolition of the existing slaughterhouse and accounts for 2.5 per cent of the total project cost.
PMC veterinary officer Sarika Punde said the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) had notified PMC over the pollution caused by effluent released from the slaughterhouse. “The PMC has improved the performance of the effluent treatment plant in the slaughterhouses. But the slaughterhouse is too old, so there is a need to modernize it and make it capable of handling more animals in a day, from 100 to 200,” he said.
If the slaughterhouse is rebuilt as per APEDA norms then the facility will be of the best standards where packaging of meat for export quality products can be done, Punde said.
The hygienic conditions of the new slaughterhouse will further encourage maximum sellers to use it efficiently, he said, adding that nearby local bodies are already seeking permission to send authorized sellers to use the facility, but have currently been denied permission.
