Other riders from the two Indian teams participating in the first-of-its-kind race were praised for the newly paved roads in Pune district at a press conference on January 16.
The Pune Grand Tour is India’s first five-day, multi-stage UCI 2.2 category men’s cycling race. The district administration claims to have spent hundreds of millions of rupees on resurfacing the 437-kilometre route passing through Pune city. 171 cyclists from 35 countries will participate in this event that passes through 9 talukas and 150 villages.
That also highlighted why organizing this race was important in India. “It would be great for us if more such races were held, especially in India. When we go to Europe or somewhere else just to compete, it becomes very difficult for us. We have to manage our stay, our food, then registration and all that. After that, concentrating on the race, when you are alone, becomes more difficult. But we have everything in India, our coach, our managers. It is our home.”
Maxat Ayazabayev, head coach of the Indian national team, said: “It is extremely important for India to host more and more races of this type for the development of our riders. The Pune Grand Tour will provide our riders with valuable international-level racing experience on their home roads. The routes, organization and overall preparation have been impressive, and we are hopeful of achieving good results.”
