A 30-year-old computer engineer who allegedly committed suicide due to harassment and demands for dowry by her husband and in-laws was forced to undergo sex determination while pregnant and a forced abortion, her family alleged.
The police arrested her mother-in-law, who is a sarpanch, and her husband in the case.
Dipti Rohan Chaudhari (30), died allegedly by suicide at her house in Kad vasti in Sortapwadi area of Uruli Kanchan around 7.30 pm on January 24.
Police said Dipti married Rohan Karbhari Chaudhari in 2019 and the couple has a three-year-old daughter.
An FIR was registered in the case at the Uruli Kanchan police station under the Pune Rural Police on the basis of the complaint lodged by Dipti’s mother Hemlata Balasaheb Magar (50), a resident of Magarpatta town.
“We have booked four people, including her husband Rohan, her brother-in-law Rohit, her mother-in-law Sunita, who is sarpanch of Sortapwadi, and her father-in-law Karbhari. Of them, Sunita and Rohan have been arrested,” said Sandeep Singh Gill, superintendent of police, Pune Rural.
Dipti, the mother, has alleged in the FIR that her husband and in-laws constantly harassed her, verbally and physically abused her.

They also mentally harassed her for giving birth to a baby girl. She was allegedly forced to undergo a sex determination test when she was recently pregnant and when illegal tests revealed it was a female fetus, she was forced to undergo an abortion.
When asked about the aspect of sex determination and forced abortion, Gill added: “That aspect is also being thoroughly investigated.”
Police have booked the accused under sections 80 (dowry death) of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, 108 (abetment to suicide), 85 (husband or relative of husband subjecting wife to cruelty), 89 (causing miscarriage without consent of wife), 352 (intentional insult with intent to cause breach of peace), 351(3) (criminal intimidation – aggravated form), 115(2) (voluntarily causing serious injury).Rohan (31) and Sunita (58) were arrested on Monday and will remain in police custody till January 31. A search is on for Rohit and Karbhari.
