Maharashtra School Education and Sports Minister Dada Bhuse on Tuesday said basic military education and moral guidance lectures to be given in schools would begin from February 1. Bhuse made the announcement while speaking at the diamond jubilee celebration of Maharashtra textbook publisher Balbharti in Pune.
Bhuse said, “From February, girls will be taught self-defence in schools and all students will be given military training and moral guidance. This will include scouts and guides, National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets and retired military personnel from nearby areas.”
In June last year, Bhuse announced that the government plans to start this program to inculcate patriotism and discipline among students from an early age. He had said that the government plans to induct more than 2.5 lakh ex-servicemen across Maharashtra, apart from NCC cadets, scouts and guides. The Department of School Education will collaborate with the Ministry of Ex-servicemen Welfare for these trainings.
Referring to the recent incident in Badlapur, where the police arrested a 37-year-old school van driver for allegedly sexually abusing a four-year-old girl, Bhuse said, “We all know that a similar incident occurred in 2024 in Badlapur and the accused was killed in an encounter. But even after that, the incident occurred again. This shows a wicked mentality present in the society. Therefore, it is important to impart moral knowledge at the school level.”
Talking about Balbharti, Bhuse said people have an emotional connection with Balbharti, which introduced children from letter recognition to literature. “Although generations and technology have changed, the poems and lessons in the textbooks are still remembered. Unique and good quality textbooks are continually offered at low prices. These textbooks are available in 10 languages,” he said.
