With the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections over, attention has now turned to the January 22 lottery that will determine the reservation of the mayor’s post for the next five years.
Annirudha Jewlikar, deputy secretary of the Ministry of Urban Affairs of Maharashtra, said that the lottery for the post of mayor will be held in Bombay in the presence of the Minister of State for Urban Affairs. “This process will ensure reservation of seats for all 29 municipal corporations,” Jewlikar said.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the largest partywinning 119 of 165 seats in the Pune Municipal Corporation. The National Congress Party (NCP) won 27 seats and its alliance partner NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) won three seats. The Congress has 15 corporators elected to the PMC and its ally Shiv Sena (UBT) won one seat.
The term of the PMC mayor is two and a half years. In the previous term, the position was reserved for women during the first half, followed by the Open category during the rest of the term.
“The reservation is on a rotating basis. The previous reservation, which was in the Open category, is taken into account. Therefore, this time it is likely to be reserved for SC, ST, Women and OBC categories,” said former BJP corporator Ujjwal Keskar.
Notably, corporate women outnumber men in the PMC, with 83 of the 165 seats reserved for women, and women also won several unreserved seats.
According to the PMC, the first meeting of the general body will be convened 15 days after the state government declares reservation of the post of mayor, after which elections for mayor and deputy mayor will be held.
