Inside Southern Army Commander’s high-risk security review and 2,500-patient medical mission in Gujarat

Southern Army Commander Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth carried out an operational review of the strategically critical Creek and Kutch sectors in Gujarat. The Army Commander also oversaw an inter-agency exercise focusing on the various operational domains of Gujarat.

“Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command, conducted a comprehensive operational review in the state of Gujarat, with special focus on readiness along the Creek and Kutch sectors. During the visit, he oversaw the large-scale Defense Gujarat exercise, which validated operational readiness, multi-agency coordination and rapid response mechanisms in challenging terrain and operational environments. The exercise reaffirmed Southern Command’s ability to safeguard national interests in the various domains. Gujrat operations”. read a press release issued by the Southern Command.

“At Bhuj Military Station, the Army Commander inaugurated a mega surgical eye camp outreach program organized with the support of teams of ophthalmology specialists from Army Hospital (Research and Referral), New Delhi. The camp screened more than 2,500 patients from more than 120 remote villages and restored vision to more than 200 beneficiaries through advanced diagnostic and surgical interventions. “This initiative reflected the Army’s long-standing commitment to providing quality healthcare to the furthest frontiers and underserved communities of Gujarat,” the statement added.

“The visit culminated with Shaurya Sandhya, which was attended by the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel – an evening that combines martial pride with cultural expression. The program featured NIFT students showcasing Indian fashion through khadi along with the grace of Bharatnatyam with soulful martial performances of soldiers in Jhanj Pathak, Kalaripayattu and army martial arts routine,” the statement added.

The Rann of Kutch, which is a marshland located between the Indian state of Gujarat and the province of Sindh in Pakistan. Similarly, the Sir Creek region is a swampy area that opens to the Arabian Sea. Marshy terrain, tidal creeks, and lack of physical barriers make monitoring and patrolling difficult, increasing the chances of infiltration.

Last year in November, the Southern Command led a tri-service exercise Trishul that took place from the Thar Desert to the Kutch sector along the western border and included modules ranging from cyber warfare to drone combat, from electronic warfare to amphibious operations. The exercise culminated in a joint amphibious exercise that validated mastery in both the virtual and physical domains with full-spectrum land-sea-air integration. Trishul had carried out large-scale operations in the Creek and desert sectors of Rajasthan and Gujarat, along with comprehensive maritime operations, including amphibious operations in the North Arabian Sea.
