It begins with a young citizen who questions whether municipal corporation elections really matter. That’s when a statue of Gandhi intervenes. explain how local body elections give representation to citizens at the local level.
“It is the municipal corporations who decide how the city grows and ensure that the municipality performs all its tasks properly… Growth without accountability, local leadership leads to chaos. Municipal leaders determine how growth is guided,” says Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in one of the pages of this comic.
This quote, where Gandhi explains the importance of voting in local elections and not only in national ones, does not come from a film by Munna Bhai but from a comic published by the Pune Municipal Corporation.
Titled ‘My city, my vote’, the comic tries to explain the importance of voting in local body elections. It begins with a young citizen wondering if municipal corporation elections really matter. This is when a statue of Gandhi intervenes to explain how local body elections give representation to citizens at the local level.
The comic is drawn by comic artist Chaitanya Govande. In an Instagram post, he posted the comic and wrote: “It’s time to step up for local democracy!
When the young citizen says that most of his friends don’t vote, Gandhi says, “So decisions are made without them. Silence also shapes democracy, but not in your favor.” Why are politicians visible only during elections and disappear afterwards? Gandhi says: “The corporators you elect are from your area, which makes them more accessible than national leaders.”
The comic goes on to explain the structure of local bodies in Maharashtra – from Nagar Panchayats to municipal councils and municipal corporations. He explains that Pune’s 35.5 lakh voters are divided into 41 districts with 165 corporations to be elected, and how citizens have to vote for 4 candidates in most of the districts. Voter IDs can be verified at the PMC website using one’s own name.

In typical Gen Z fashion, the young citizen pesters Gandhi to take a selfie before allowing him to finish the comic.
