A 29-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly murdering her 11-year-old son by slitting his throat and attacking her 13-year-old daughter with a sharp weapon at their house in Wagholi area of Pune.
According to police, the woman allegedly attacked her children after a fight with her husband over his alcohol addiction.
The police said that when the woman was going to end her life, neighbors came to the apartment hearing her daughter’s screams.
The deceased child was identified as Sairaj Santosh Jaybhay and his injured sister Dhanashree. His mother, Soni Santosh Jaybhay (29), has been arrested on charges of murder and attempt to murder.
The incident took place on Tuesday morning at his rented apartment in Pathan Heights building on Baif Road in Wagholi.
The family hails from Kandhar taluka of Nanded and had moved into their current rented residence about eight days earlier.
“Our investigation suggests that Soni’s husband Santosh Jaybhay works as an excavator operator and is an alcoholic. Due to his addiction, the couple always fought as the owner of their previous rented place had asked them to go on vacation. The husband never paid attention to the family and children. Due to this, Soni was in danger,” said Inspector Sarjerao Kumbhar of Lonikand police station and currently in-charge of Wagholi police station.

“On the night of January 26, Santosh came home in a drunken state and fought with Soni. Sometime before 9 am on Tuesday, Santosh left the house after another fight with Soni. Minutes later, the Pathan family, neighbors of the family, heard Dhanashree’s screams and came running to Jaybhay’s apartment. They saw that Sairaj was lying in a pool of blood and his throat had been slit. Dhanashree was also cut. in the throat. The neighbors informed the police and the doctors took the children to the hospital added Inspector Kumbhar.
“Investigation has revealed that Soni used a sharp weapon to slit her son’s throat and also attacked her daughter in the same manner. However, the daughter managed to escape and get help. Investigation suggests that the mother wanted to end her life but could not take the extreme step after neighbors reached the apartment hearing her daughter’s screams,” Kumbhar said, adding that the daughter, who is seriously injured, is being treated at a hospital and her condition is stable.
