Commuters from Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur and other parts of Maharashtra may face the disturbance travels on saturdayon February 7, as app-based taxi and rickshaw drivers plan a day-long strike to protest non-implementation of the state’s aggregator policy and alleged illegal operations.

Several unions, including the Indian Gig Workers Front and the Baghtoy Rickshawala Union, have called for the protest.

Keshav Kshirsagar, head of both unions, told The indian express“The aggregators are operating illegally and they should get a valid license which we have been following for a long time. And more importantly, the aggregators are not following the RTO approved fares, causing inconvenience to both passengers and drivers. Also, bike taxis are operational in some parts of Bombaywhich should be stopped by strict enforcement.”

Drivers affiliated with platforms like Ola, Uber and Rapido are expected to stay off the roads across the state on Saturday. Nowadays, commuters often face issues like taxi drivers demanding higher fares than those shown on apps, and rickshaw drivers insisting on metered fares instead of app-based prices.

The strike is likely to cause disruption in key locations, including Pune airport, where app-based bookings through Aeromall are the main option for hiring taxis. Commuters who rely heavily on aggregation services may also be affected.

However, Kshirsagar clarified that metered autorickshaws that are not linked to aggregation apps will continue to operate to minimize inconvenience to passengers.

“We expected the government to implement the taxi aggregation policy after the municipal elections, but nothing has materialized. Transport department officials had said before the elections that the policy was almost complete, but no action had been taken,” Kshirsagar said.

Some unions, however, indicated that they would continue services while they spoke with the government.

Varsha Shinde, president of Maa Saheb Cab Sanstha, said, “After the eight-day strike last year, we witnessed both passengers and drivers facing the toughest and most massive inconvenience. We will continue our services while putting forward our demands through dialogue.”

A similar strike last year left many travelers stranded across the state.
