The Pune Metro has started the second phase of works taking up the construction of the double-decker route extension from Ramwadi station, comprising a 4.7 km flyover at the first level and an elevated Metro line.

“We have started the process of developing the elevated railway route and the Metro on the Nagar road stretch. It is a very big job as the Metro stations would be built on top of the flyovers on the route,” said Atul Gadgil, CEO of Pune Metro.

This will be the third such double-decker project after the Karve Road project, which encompasses the two metro stations between SNDT University and Garware College, and the Ganeshkhind Road project, which is already partially operational.

The latest project will be a 4.7 km long elevated stretch from Ramwadi to Tuljabhavani after merging with the proposed line at Kharadi bypass station and the proposed Viman Nagar spur line to Pune airport.

The first level will have a 4.7 km six-lane elevated road, including a solid ramp that will ensure a minimum legal vertical space of 5.5 meters to the Metro and the elevated road. This will help resolve the traffic on the Pune-Ahilyanagar highway.

Construction of deck and vestibule girders, including erection and pouring of deck slabs, will be carried out at four stations on all levels. The construction of the Metro route and branches, as well as the six-lane elevated road on the first level, will be planned in such a way that they do not obstruct or interfere with existing roads, railways and other public services.

“Where work is required to be carried out at locations adjacent to such roads, railways, utilities, structures and monuments, adequate safety and security measures will be ensured,” Gadgil said.

The elevated highway is proposed to be built in a six-lane configuration with plans to expand it to an eight-lane configuration in the future.

In June last year, the central government approved the construction of the extension of the Vanaz-Ramwadi road, up to Chandni Chowk on one side and Wagholi on the other. However, the existing work to be carried out will be from Ramwadi to Tuljabhavinagar with the construction of four stations – Vimannagar, Somnathnagar, Kharadi bypass and Tuljabhavani.

Pune Metro has two operational routes from Vanaz to Ramwadi and Pimpri Chinchwad to Swargate. Work on widening the Pimpri Chinchwad-Swargate route has already begun, with an extension to Bhakti Shakti from Pimpri Chinchwad and Katraj from Swargate. These extensions are expected to serve key IT hubs, commercial areas, educational institutions and residential areas, increasing the proportion of public transport and ridership across the network.

The Pune Metro has also started work on extending the route from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk to 1,123 metres, which will be two stations: Kothrud Depot and Chandni Chowk. It is planned to develop a small overpass on the first level of the Metro route in a small section.
