BJP wins 119 seats as rivals lose city leadership

Published on

The BJP’s defeat in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections not only decimated the strength of rival parties but also resulted in the defeat of several city unit chiefs, dealing a blow to their parties’ prospects in city politics.

The BJP won 119 of the 165 seats, while the Ajit Pawar-led NCP and Sharad Pawar-led NCP(SP) together won 30 seats. The Congress won 15 seats and its ally Shiv Sena (UBT) got only one.

The NCP won 27 seats, but its municipal unit chief Subhash Jagtap lost a close contest in the civic polls.

The NCP (SP) had suffered a setback even before the elections, when its municipal unit chief Prashant Jagtap quit the party and joined the Congress after the party decided to align with the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, against whom it had fought in the 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

The Shiv Sena (UBT), which contested the PMC elections in alliance with the Congress and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), could win only one seat. The head of its municipal unit, Sanjay More, failed to be elected. However, city Congress chief Arvind Shinde won his seat, continuing his family’s legacy in the civic body.

The MNS suffered a serious setback by failing to win a single seat, including the one contested by its municipal unit chief, Sainath Babar, who had been a businessman in the previous term.

He Eknath ShindeThe party-led Shiv Sena contested the PMC elections independently but failed to open its account. He also lost his city unit chief and former corporator, Pramod Bhangire. Bhangire had been a corporator during the previous five-year tenure and was the only former corporator to remain in Eknath Shinde after the Shiv Sena split. The party had 10 corporators in the previous body, all of whom, except Bhangire, had defected to the BJP. Some of them have now been elected as BJP corporators.

Instead, the BJP’s list of 119 winners includes its municipal unit chief, Dhiraj Ghate, who was re-elected for a second consecutive term.

Apart from the city unit chiefs, several senior leaders were also defeated, including former mayor and NCP candidate Datta Dhankawade, former NCP (SP) mayor Kamal Vyavhare, former deputy mayor and Shiv Sena candidate Ulhas Bagul, and former opposition leader and NCP candidate Dipali Dhumal.
