Western Railway on Saturday commissioned the Sixth line of 3.21 km between Kandivali and Borivalimarking the completion of Phase I of the Mumbai Central-Borivali sixth line project. The section was opened to traffic following a successful inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) on January 18.

The entire Phase I corridor from Bandra Terminus (BDTS) to Borivali is now completed. The earlier stretches, Khar-Goregaon (8.8 km) and Goregaon-Kandivali (4.54 km), were commissioned in November 2023 and October 2024, respectively.

The 6th Line project between Bombay Central and Borivali are being executed in phases. Phase I covers the Bandra Terminus-Borivali stretch, now fully completed. Subsequent phases will extend the sixth line southwards from Bandra Terminus to Mumbai Central, aiming to further segregate suburban and long-distance traffic and ease congestion on the western rail corridor.

“The sixth line between Kandivali and Borivali was completed within the planned execution period of 30 days and commissioned after a successful inspection by CRS yesterday,” said Vineet Abhishek, director public relations, Western Railway. “The project strengthens line capacity and operational flexibility in the suburban section of Mumbai.”

“With the sixth line now operational, suburban and non-suburban train movements can be segregated in this section, which will help decongest existing lines and improve punctuality,” Abhishek said.

Operationally, the new sixth line will provide a dedicated corridor for long-distance and non-suburban trains, relieving pressure on existing suburban tracks and improving overall efficiency on one of India’s busiest railway networks.
