The plane carrying Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has been identified as a Learjet 45, a small business jet commonly used for VIP and charter travel.
The Learjet 45 is a twin-engine aircraft manufactured by Bombardier under the Learjet brand. It was first introduced in the late 1990s and entered service in 1998. It was designed primarily for short and medium-distance travel and became popular with business leaders and politicians because it saves travel time.
The plane usually seats between six and eight passengers, depending on its interior layout. The cabin is usually arranged in a club-type seating configuration, with two rows of seats facing each other and a small aisle in the middle. Some versions also have a side seat or a small sofa. There is a small snack area and an enclosed bathroom at the rear of the cabin.
The plane is flown by two pilots and can also carry a cabin attendant on longer flights.
The Learjet 45 is designed for speed and comfort. It can fly between 800 and 850 kilometers per hour and has a range of almost 3,000 kilometers, allowing non-stop travel between many of India’s major cities.
A key advantage of this aircraft is that it can operate from smaller airports and shorter runways compared to large commercial airliners. This makes it suitable for political tours and urgent trips, especially when leaders need to visit several places in a limited time.
In India, these aircraft are registered with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. Each aircraft has a unique registration number starting with the letters VT, which functions like a license plate for an aircraft. The crashed plane has number VT-SSK-LJ45 and is registered to VSR Ventures Pvt Ltd, a non-scheduled operator based in Delhi.

The Learjet 45 has been used around the world for over two decades and is considered reliable when properly maintained. Like any aircraft, it must follow strict safety procedures during takeoff and landing and is affected by weather and runway conditions.
