A 63-year-old woman was killed and a 34-year-old woman was injured in a fire that broke out in a residential building in Vile Parle East in the western suburbs of Mumbai on Monday afternoon.

The fire broke out on the 13th floor of the Suvidha Pearl building on Pheroze Shah Mehta Road around 12:44 pm, according to the disaster cell of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Firefighters said the fire started in an electrical wiring conduit inside one room and soon spread to other rooms in the apartment.

The deceased was identified as Bhavna Satra, who was in the apartment during the incident, along with the injured woman, Aneree. officials of the Bombay Firefighters (MFB) said the victims inhaled smoke, which caused breathing difficulties and ultimately led to the death of one of them.

The victims were rushed to Nanavati Hospital, where one of them was declared brought dead, while the other was receiving treatment.

The MFB deployed five fire engines and two water tankers to assist in the rescue, and at around 1:44 p.m. the fire was extinguished.

“The apartment was situated on the top floor of the building, so it was difficult to carry out the firefighting operation as the entire corridor and stairs were engulfed in smoke. The victims inhaled the smoke and when they were brought out, both of them were unconscious,” an MFB official said.

Firefighters said once the cooling operation is complete, an investigation will begin to determine the cause of the fire.
