Amid renewed speculation about a possible merger of the two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party, NCP (SP) leaders claimed on Friday that talks on reunification had concluded and were awaiting a formal announcement, even as that Ajit Pawar-led NCP He remained silent on the issue and refused to recognize such a decision.

A day after NCP (SP) state president Shashikant Shinde and MLA Jayant Patil said merger talks had been finalized, party leader Eknath Khadse claimed that discussions had been underway for several months. “It was almost decided that the merger would happen. There was a plan to announce the merger,” Khadse said.

Former home minister Anil Deshmukh said Ajit Pawar himself wanted the factions to come together. “Ajit Pawar wanted a merger to take place. Jayant Patil also held meetings… We will decide it after the municipal corporation elections. Both factions should unite as per Ajit Dada’s wish. This was his last wish, so appropriate action should be taken,” Deshmukh said.

Former minister and NCP (SP) leader Rajesh Tope said the merger decision was taken in the presence of Ajit Pawar. “We are witnesses of it. Only the announcement was left, which was to be made after the Zilla Parishad elections,” Tope said.

He indian express On Friday it reported that the formal announcement of the merger was scheduled for February 8.

However, sources within the NCP said that only Ajit Pawar had held talks with NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and there was no clarity within the party about a final decision. “If the decision on merger was taken, no one within the NCP was aware. Whether the announcement was after the Zilla Parishad polls or at some point later, it was not known within the party,” said a party leader.

A merger of the two factions would result in power sharing and place Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule at the center of a unified party.

However, NCP state president Sunil Tatkare said the party’s immediate priority was to elect its legislative leader. He said nothing further had been discussed.

Maharashtra Minister Chhagan Bhujbal also downplayed merger talks, saying the party’s aim was to fill the vacant post of deputy chief minister. “I’m not sure about anything else,” Bhujbal said.
