The Center on Wednesday gave administrative sanction to set up a state-of-the-art wholesale fish market with international standards at Marol (Andheri), Mumbai, at a cost of Rs 138 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The project has been included in the Maharashtra Annual Action Plan for fiscal year 2025-26.

Additionally, the plan includes the provision of livelihood and nutritional support to approximately 2,816 beneficiaries from traditional and economically weaker fishing communities during the fishing ban period.

The proposed modern fish market in Marol will consist of a six-storey building equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure. It will include integrated cold chain facilities, scientific wastewater and hygiene management systems, advanced fire safety mechanisms, a solar energy facility, modern electrical systems and ample parking space.
The project will also provide international standard trade management facilities, ensuring better storage, sorting, processing and distribution of fishery products. This is expected to improve quality standards and boost export potential. Traditional fishermen, wholesalers and traders will benefit from a transparent and technologically advanced trading platform.

Regarding the project, Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane on Thursday said he had maintained regular coordination with the Centre, National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) and other concerned authorities to ensure timely sanction of the State’s proposal and avoid delays in disbursement of funds.

Rane said, “Establishing a world-class wholesale fish market in a metropolitan city like Bombay It was the need of the hour. This project will not only streamline trade but also provide employment opportunities and stability to thousands of fishermen and associated stakeholders. “It marks a significant step towards strengthening the Blue Economy of Maharashtra.”

The project is expected to reduce the burden on existing fish markets in and around Mumbai by creating a planned, hygienic and technologically sound market. Improved infrastructure will support exporters with better quality handling and logistics, thereby contributing to increased exports of marine products from Maharashtra.

The state government has decided to establish an independent monitoring and supervision mechanism to ensure timely implementation of the project, the minister said. All procedures will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines of the Central Government, he added.
