Mumbai Police has invoked strict charges under the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) against the five accused booked for Shooting at filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s Juhu house. A special court sent the accused to police custody till February 17.
Police told the court the dismissal was part of an organized crime syndicate conspiracy. The MCOCA is a law intended to be invoked against unions that commit crimes for pecuniary gain. Police said the accused wanted to spread terror in the city. Police have sought further custody of the five accused for another two weeks, stating that they want to investigate the links and whereabouts of absconding accused Shubham Lonkar.
The accused’s lawyer, Ajinkya Mirgal, said the police had not presented new reasons justifying the need to prolong their detention. In granting custody to the police, the court said the police should be given enough time to further investigate the case, noting that the case appears to be “the tip of the iceberg.”
The five accused are Siddharth Yenpure (20), Samarth Pomaji (18), Swapnil Sakat (23), Asaram Fasale (27) and Aaditya Gayaki (19).
