As many as five municipal wards in central Mumbai and eastern and western suburbs will suffer low water pressure for three days as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) undertakes maintenance work on one of the city’s supply divisions.
According to civic officials, the maintenance work will be carried out from 9 am on January 20 to 5 pm on January 22, and during this 44-hour period water will be supplied to low pressure, causing a cut in the total amount of water supplied.
Civic officials said the disruption in supply is due to a portion of the 2,400 mm water main that supplies water to Bombay of the Vaitarna dam will undergo maintenance. Officials said that due to the ongoing Metro works, the main channel of the waterway was diverted in a new direction. The authorities will now link the newly installed water channel with the existing network to ensure that there are no continuous interruptions in the water supply.
Officials said the areas that will be affected include Dharavi, Dadar, Mahim and Matunga in G North district; Marol, Chakala, Airport Road and Sahar in K East district in Andheri East; Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg and Bhandup in S district; Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Santacruz in H East district; and Ghatkopar area in district N.
“The supply will be done in a phased manner so that there is no wastage of water when the valves are opened for repair and maintenance work. The water pressure will be low, so citizens are asked to use water with caution,” a civic official said. Officials also said that during these three days there will be changes in the regular water supply; However, the schedules will be informed one day in advance.
Earlier in November, several areas of Mumbai in 16 municipal wards recorded a day-long water cut while the BMC carried out maintenance work on water supply systems.
