The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has written to the state government demanding an extension in the deadline for maintaining the annual civic budget.
“We have written to the state government, asking them to allow us an extension to announce the budget. We have demanded an extension period till March 4, 2026,” municipal commissioner and state-appointed administrator Bhushan Gagrani told The Times. indian express.
The state government and Bombay The Municipal Corporations Act (MMC) requires elections to be held before February 4 every year. Typically, the commissioner presents the budget and delivers it to the standing committee chair and the mayor.
While the body of elected representatives has already been elected in the recently concluded civic elections, the mayoral candidate has not yet been selected. The mayor is selected after a lottery process conducted by the Urban Development Directorate (UDD) of the state government which will decide on the reservation.
Next, the political parties nominate the candidates and finally the mayor is elected, after a voting process in the room.
The mayor will appoint the chairmen of the statutory committees of the BMC, including the civic standing committee, which is responsible for all financial matters of the BMC.
“Since the budget will be given to the mayor and the permanent president, it can only be presented after these committees have been installed and the presidents selected,” another official said.
