The Mumbai Police on Monday arrested a businessman from Agripada after his Mercedes car, allegedly driven by a minor, crashed into an EcoSport on the coastal highway in the early hours, leaving three people injured.
According to the police, the accident occurred around 1:45 a.m. inside a highway tunnel when a Mercedes was traveling at full speed heading south. Bombaycrashed into the SUV from behind. The impact of the accident pushed the EcoSport into a Honda City car moving in the same direction, a police officer said.
The EcoSport was driven by Prasanna Mopkar, 36, a resident of Mira Road, who was traveling with his wife and mother-in-law towards south Mumbai. Mopkar left Mira Road around 12.30am along with his wife and picked up his mother-in-law on the way from Borivali. They were heading to Bademiya Hotel in Colaba for dinner. Police said Mopkar and his mother-in-law suffered minor injuries, while his wife suffered serious injuries to her nose and was rushed to G.T. Hospital.
During the investigation, police discovered that the Mercedes is registered to an elderly businessman residing in Agripada. Her 18-year-old granddaughter apparently took the car keys from her house and headed towards south Mumbai, along with her 17-year-old friend. She allowed her friend to drive the car, who lost control of the vehicle inside the tunnel, causing the accident, the police officer added.
“The minor driver was unable to control the vehicle due to high speed, which led to the collision. According to preliminary investigation, he was not under the influence of alcohol,” the police officer said.
The DB Marg police have booked the car owner, his granddaughter and her minor friend under sections of rash and negligent driving, apart from those under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Further investigation is underway, the police officer said.
