The Worli police have launched a hunt for a group of five to six people who allegedly extorted Rs 2 million from a 70-year-old man over the last two years by threatening to defame and assault him. The cash-strapped victim approached the police after the accused continued to demand more money and allegedly threatened his life if he did not pay an additional Rs 1 million.

According to the police, one of the accused first approached the elderly man who lives alone in Worli in January 2024 and gradually gained his trust.

According to the police, what started as a demand for financial help to cover the treatment expenses of the accused’s father gradually turned into threats of extortion over the next two years after the gang realized that the victim was financially well-off and lived alone.

The accused had met the elderly man several times for lunch or dinner, and during such meetings a woman was also present with the group, police said.

“The gang began threatening him with defamation and physical assault if he refused to pay. The group allegedly extorted Rs 2 million from the victim at multiple premises, repeatedly threatening to defame his reputation or endanger his life, a senior police officer said.

“Once the victim’s savings were exhausted, the accused allegedly demanded an additional Rs 1 million, warning him of assault if he did not give money. Running out of money, the victim was under severe mental stress and was reportedly contemplating ending his life,” the officer said. The distraught victim spoke about the series of events to an acquaintance, who advised her to approach the police.

Police at Worli police station recorded the elderly man’s statement on Thursday and registered a case under multiple branches of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including extortion, against an unidentified group of five to six people.
