Actor Rajpal Yadav on Thursday surrendered before the Tihar jail authorities after the Delhi High Court refused to extend the deadline in connection with his conviction in check bounce cases. “He surrendered before the jail authorities on Thursday at 4 pm. Now the jail authorities will follow the standard operating procedure,” a jail source said.

the superior court on Wednesday refused to extend the deadline given to Yadav to surrender to prison authorities. Yadav’s lawyer, who on February 2 was ordered to surrender at 4 pm on Wednesday, told the court that the actor had arranged a sum of Rs 50 lakh and was asking for one more week to make the payment.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma, however, rejected Yadav’s plea seeking an extension of the deadline to surrender, saying there were no grounds to grant him relief.

The court proceedings came in the wake of review petitions filed by Yadav and his wife challenging a 2019 decision of a sessions court, which upheld their conviction by a magistrate court here in the check bounce cases in April 2018.

In June 2024, the High Court had temporarily suspended his sentence, provided he took “sincere and genuine measures” to explore the possibility of reaching an amicable settlement with the opposing party.

The court of first instance had sentenced him to six months in prison.

At the time, Yadav’s lawyer had said that it was a genuine transaction to finance the production of a film, which failed at the box office and caused huge financial losses.

In the order passed on February 2, while directing him to surrender before 4 pm on February 4, the top court had observed that Yadav’s conduct deserved to be disapproved as he repeatedly failed to fulfill his undertakings before the court to refund the amount to the plaintiff M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd.

The court had directed that Yadav was required to make a payment of Rs 1.35 crore in each of the seven cases against him and ordered that the amount already deposited in the General Registry of the apex court be released in favor of the plaintiff.

In October 2025, two demand drafts of Rs 75 lakh were deposited with the Registrar General and an amount of Rs 9 crore remained to be paid, the order stated.

On February 4, the court refused to extend the deadline given to Yadav to surrender before the jail authorities.
