Delhi High Court heard the actor Celina Jaitly’s request regarding her brotherMajor (retd) Vikrant Jaitly, detained in the United Arab Emirates. The court asked Celina and her sister-in-law, Charul Jaitly, to put aside their differences and work together instead of turning the case into a ‘family dispute’.
Vikrant Jaitly is a retired Special Forces commando of the Indian Army. He has been detained in the UAE for the past 18 months and Celina took it upon herself to contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and have him released. Now the MEA has updated the Delhi High Court over his contact with Vikrant and UAE authorities.
The matter was heard before Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav, with CGSC Nidhi Raman speaking on behalf of the ministry. The lawyer informed the court that Vikrant is now “interacting regularly” and the next interaction will take place on February 13. The statement also mentioned that Vikrant chose to interact with his wife (Charul Jaitly), but not his sister Celina. The wife’s lawyer informed the court that his client “has been with him (Vikrant)” at all times.
According to a PTI report, the MEA will give Vikrant the option to choose from four different lawyers. Celina, for her part, appeared in court and said that she had chosen to take on her brother’s case despite being divorced. She said the only reason she took this to court was because Charul “hindered” her.
The court then turned its attention to Charul, who had joined through a video call, and asked her if she wanted her husband to be released. When she responded in the affirmative, the court asked her why she had not authorized the UAE firm to represent her husband. Charul responded that she is the closest relative and Celina does not have all the information. In addition, he alleged that he kept Celina informed since 2024, even though he had a “tense relationship” with his brother.
The court dismissed both women’s claims and said it was not a “family dispute.” They noted that the main concern is Vikrant, and for this both Celina and Charul will have to work in “tandem”. When Charul pointed out that her life and her husband’s case had been turned into a “media joke” and asked the court to limit information on this matter, the court immediately refused and said that there cannot be any gag order on the media.
