Singer Krishna Beura, known for humming hits like ‘Maula Mere Le Le Meri Jaan’ by Chak De IndiaAashiq Banaya Aapne’s ‘Aap Ki Kashish’ and more recently opened up about her breakup with Alka Yagnik. In a recent interaction, Krishna shared how Alka showed displeasure over winning the award for the song Chak De India and how he too did not hide his disappointment and openly criticized her during his speech at the award ceremony.
When asked about the tension between him and Alka Yagnik at an awards show in 2007 and whether his comments upset the music industry, Krishna told Hindi Rush: “No one was angry with me. What happened was that I was receiving an award for Chak De India. I got a call from the management and they asked me what I had done in this song. I asked them, ‘Don’t you know what I have done? You are giving me the award.’ They said that two people are credited in the song, Salim Merchant and I then explained that Salim gave his vocals at the beginning of the song, but I sang the rest of the song. They told me that I would receive the award in that category and asked me to come to the awards ceremony.
He went on to say, “There were Bappi Lahiri and Alka Yagnik presenting the award. I took the award from them. I touched their feet. I respect them. After Lata Mangeshkar, the person who reached that level is Alka Yagnik. I thought Alkaji would appreciate me, but he said two words: ‘Yaar Isko kaise diya award (How did they give you the prize?)’. I was very sad at that moment. At the awards show, they edit parts out, so I wasn’t rude to anyone. All I said was, ‘I thank Sanjay Dutt for giving me the opportunity in this industry.’ Salim–Sulaiman for giving me the opportunity to sing this song and I thanked other people. I told him: “I will try to sing better so that Alka Yagnik will be happy too.” I don’t think I said anything wrong in this. “This was not broadcast on television.”
Sharing his thoughts on Alka Yagnik’s comment, Krishna further said, “I thought of her as Ma Saraswati. I was nominated with great singers like Kunal Ganjawala, Sonu Nigam, Neeraj Shridhar, the film Sawariya’s songs were also nominated but I got the award. It wasn’t my fault but I felt sad because of what she said.”
For the unversed, Alka Yagnik has recently been called Padma Bhushan. Thanking his listeners and the government, he told HT City: “I want to thank the government for granting me this prestigious honor. And of course, I really want to thank all my listeners for their unconditional love.”
