Grammys 2026: Kendrick Lamar dethrones Jay-Z to become the most awarded rapper at the Grammy Awards; wins the award for best rap album of the year | Music news

The world of music is constantly evolving and there is no place like the Grammys to pass the torch. This time around, at the 68th Grammy Awards, fans were able to witness many similar moments, where new artists seemed ready to take over and move the world of music forward. While rapper Kendrick Lamar isn’t a new face by any means, he took on a pretty big throne this time around. His album GNX won the Best Rap award. album of the year, and took home a few other accolades, officially making him the most awarded hip-hop star of all time, surpassing Jay-Z.

In addition to winning Rap Album of the Year, Kendrick also took home Best Rap Song for his ‘TV Off’ from the same album, Best Melodic Rap Performance for ‘Luther’ featuring SZA, and Best Rap Performance for his performance on the song. ‘Chains and whips’ by hip-hop duo Clipse. This brings his total to 26, just one more than Brooklyn rapper Jay and two more than Kanye West. No more awards have been announced yet, and Kendrick could end up adding to that tally.

Kendrick often keeps his acceptance speeches short and to the point, using the platform to congratulate his heroes and the entire genre. While accepting the award for Best Rap Album, Kendrick said, “It’s hip-hop as always, man. I’m not good at talking about myself, but I express it through music. It’s an honor to be here… Hip-hop will always be here. We’ll be in these suits, we’ll look good, we’ll have our people with us. We’ll have the culture with us. So I appreciate you all. God is in the glory. I love you all.”

The ‘Damn’ rapper continues his dream run at the Grammy Awards and now has a total of 66 nominations. Last year, his song ‘Not Like Us’, which was a song aimed at Drake, won in 5 categories. He has won Best Rap Album in the past for To Pimp A Butterfly (2016), Damn (2018) and Mr Morale and the Big Steppers (2023). Even before receiving the Grammy, GNX received mostly positive reviews from critics. While the win isn’t a huge surprise, many expected Clipse to take home Best Rap Album for Let God Sort Em’ Out. Other nominees included Tyler, the Creator for Chromakopia, JID for God Does Like Ugly, and GloRilla for Glorious.
