Fire and mangled metal were seen near the runway of Baramati airport after a plane belonging to NCP chief and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar crashed, killing all six people on board.
Videos from the scene shared on social media showed flames and thick smoke rising from the wreckage of the charter flight. Later videos showed rescue and police personnel at the scene. The DGCA later said no one on board survived the accident.
Reports said that it was a charter flight that Pawar had boarded to reach Pune to start the campaign for the ongoing Zilla Parishad polls. He was scheduled to attend four campaign rallies in Pune.
Eyewitnesses said that the plane made a lot of noise before landing at Baramati airport. “The plane was making a lot of noise when landing, so my attention was focused on it. It tried to land but it went off the runway and there was a big explosion like shown in the movies,” said a curious owner of a shop next to the airport.
