Double blow for Luke Mudgway with back-to-back stage wins at the Pune Grand Tour | Pune News

After winning the first stage of the Pune Grand Tour On Tuesday, Luke Mudgway took another fantastic win in the second stage of Wednesday’s event. Named Maratha Heritage Circuit, the 105.3 km route passes through steep climbs like the Bopdev ghat and is considered the most challenging stage of the four-day race.

The stage started at Ladies Club in Camp at 12:30 pm and ended at Sinhagad Road in Nanded City. Mudgway represented the Li Ning Star, China team and finished with a time of 2:31:49.

Speaking to the media after his win, Mudgway said: “It was really difficult today. My teammates ran amazing. A lot of teams tried to attack us during the finish but we stayed strong and a teammate helped me during the last 10km after the climb and he took us to the finish.”

In fact, the top six runners recorded the same finishing time of 02:31:49, and rankings were awarded based on a photo finish. Alan Carter Bettles of Roojai Insurance Winspeed, Thailand, finished second, while Yorben Lauryssen of Tarteletto–Isorex, Belgium, took third place. Lauryssen also achieved a consecutive podium. With this victory, Mudgway received a 10-second bonus, Beetles a six-second bonus, while Lauryssen received a four-second bonus.

Clement Alleno and Jambaljamts Sainbayar, from Burgos Burpellet BH, Spain, finished fourth and fifth, while Stefan Benetton from Eurocyclingtrips – CCN, Guam, placed sixth. Stefan Benetton of Eurocyclingtrips – CCN, Guam, dominated the climbs to claim maximum points on the Ghatacha Raja (King of the Mountains) score, winning the ‘Polka Dot’ jersey.

The Best Asian Rider orange jersey went to Jambaljamts Sainbayar of Burgos Burpellet BH, Spain. Dutch rider Tijssen Viego from Wielerploeg Groot Amsterdam, Netherlands was awarded the white jersey as the ‘Best Young Rider’ while Sarda Manav, Indian Development Team, India, topped the national contingent and bagged the blue jersey as the ‘Best Indian Rider’ for the day.

The third leg of Thursday’s event, called the Western Ghats Gateway, stretches 134 kilometers from Purandar to Baramati and climbs to a height of 1,024 metres.
