The gap between Bollywood and YouTube creators is definitely decreasing in recent times. with many crossovers and collaborations that arise out of nowhere. But it seems there are still some cracks to iron out. Director Karan Johar recently filed a case against YouTube star Ajey Nagar, popularly known as CarryMinati, asking the court to get him to remove certain videos from his channel that are defamatory in nature. A Mumbai court has now ruled in favor of the director.
Ajey, his manager Deepak Char, One Hand Clap Media Pvt Ltd, Google and Meta had been named accused in the case. Civil judge PG Bhosale issued an interim order on the suit and asked Ajey to remove all existing content that is directed at Johar in any way. While Ajey’s lawyer told the court that all the content in question had already been removed and therefore there was no need to take further legal action, the court decided to grant Johar a temporary injunction. They added that the court did not have jurisdiction to hear this lawsuit.
Why did Karan Johar sue CarryMinati?
Ajey posted a roasting video on his channel titled Coffee with Jalan, prompting Karan’s legal team to point out that the video was based on Koffee with Karan, Johar’s popular talk show. The video was directed at the director himself and at the same time commented on Bollywood and nepotism in the industry. As mentioned above, Ajey’s lawyer told the court that the video had already been deleted. However, the plaintiff argued that fragments of the original video are still circulating on the Internet and that the damage has already been done.
Johar’s lawyer, who is part of DSK Legal, filed the suit and sought an injunction that would stop Ajey from making any more videos that could harm the director’s reputation. According to PTI, they argued that Johar has built his name and goodwill “carefully over decades” and that certain content on the internet, posted by Ajey, appears to ridicule him. The court agreed and said that “it appears that accused Nos. 1 and 2 (Nagar and Char) have made defamatory statements and used vulgar language against the plaintiff.”
