A partially decomposed and legless body, wrapped in a gunny bag, was found washed up on Juhu beach on Monday morning, prompting Mumbai Police to launch a murder probe.
The body was found in the jurisdiction of the Santacruz police station. Police said they are working to establish the identity of the victim and are looking into missing persons reports.

Preliminary checks indicated that a man of similar age had gone missing from Malwani in Malad.

“Looking at the condition of the body, it seems that someone was murdered a few days ago and the body was dumped four or five days ago. We are not 100 percent sure, but it seems like it is the same person who was missing in Malwani. The police called family members and a relative who gave contradictory answers,” an IPS officer said.

According to police, the Malwani resident went missing in the last week of January, and his wife filed a missing complaint on February 4. “But we have to be 100 percent sure and for this, DNA tests will be carried out on the suspected family members. It is a brutal murder and we have been investigating the case from the murder point of view,” the official added.

The body was first discovered at around 8.30am by local residents and a coastal police guard, who alerted the police. A Santacruz Police team arrived at the scene and found the body partially decomposed and wrapped in a burlap bag. The torso had been cut off at the waist and the legs were missing.

Police conducted a detailed panchnama at the spot and sent the body for autopsy. Investigations are ongoing.
