Ending speculation over who will be the guardian minister of Pune following the death of former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, the Maharashtra government on Tuesday declared that newly appointed deputy chief minister Sunetra Pawarwife of late Ajit Pawar, will take over the responsibility of the guardian minister of Pune.
Sunetra Pawar was sworn in as deputy chief minister of Maharashtra after the post fell vacant due to the death of her husband. Sunetra was elected deputy of the PNC for Rajya Sabha after his defeat against his sister-in-law Supriya Sule of the CPN (SP) in the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
After the 2024 assembly elections, the BJP has the largest strength of nine legislators elected to the state assembly of Pune district. Although the NCP has eight legislators, Pawar did not cede the post of Pune guardian minister to the BJP. Ajit first assumed the responsibility of Guardian Minister between 2004 and 2014 in the Congress-led Democratic Front government.
It was during his tenure as guardian minister that Ajit brought the NCP to power in the Pune civic body. The post was taken over by then state minister Girish Bapat of the BJP after his party came to power in the state in 2014. He took charge till March 2019, until he was elected to Lok Sabha from Pune constituency. Later, the BJP appointed state minister Chandarakant Patil to hold the post for a few months until the 2019 assembly elections.
Ajit Pawar once again took over the responsibility during the MVA government in 2019 and held it till the Uddhav Thackeray-led government was in power. When the MVA collapsed and the BJP-Shiv Sena government came to power, BJP minister Chandrakant Patil became a Guardian minister. He had to reluctantly hand over the responsibility to Ajit Pawar after the NCP joined the ruling Mahayuti alliance.
In the municipal council elections in December last year, the PNC dominated the elections by winning 10 of the 17 civic bodies. However, the BJP proved that it was a dominant force in urban areas by defeating the NCP and gaining power in Pune as well as in the Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation in the January 15 elections. Now again, the two state-level allies are fighting each other to establish their supremacy in rural areas in the ongoing Pune Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samitis elections.
