The 78th mayor of Mumbai is likely to be elected on February 11 as the elected 227 corporators council will choose the candidate after a voting process. Civic sources stated that after the mayor is electedThe election to select the chairmen of the main statutory committees, including the permanent and improvement committees, is likely to be held on February 16.

According to civic sources, the registration of the 227 municipalities concluded on Monday afternoon. Till last week, all political parties except the BJP and Shiv Sena had completed their registration.

The election to select the mayor will be held at the BMC corporators hall where all 227 corporators will vote for the nominated candidate. Political parties, depending on their strength in BMC, will nominate a candidate who meets the reservation criteria and all remaining corporators will vote for these candidates. The candidate with the maximum number of votes is elected mayor of Bombay.

The BJP, which is the largest party in the BMC, is likely to nominate Dadar corporator Sheetal Gambhir or Ghatkopar corporator Ritu Tawde as mayoral candidate.

Political parties may also nominate an independent candidate for the position of deputy mayor, who is also elected through a similar voting process. In Mumbai, the mayor and deputy mayor serve a two-and-a-half-year term and then a new candidate is again selected in a similar manner.

The BJP also nominated its senior leader Ganesh Khankar as party leader in BMC, while Shiv Sena nominated Ameya Ghole as party leader. The Sena UBT, which will be the main opposition in the civic chamber, has nominated former mayor Kishori Pednekar as the main opposition leader (LoP).
