ALMOST 35 years after it was first conceptualized and a decade after tenders were floated, the long-delayed Vidyavihar flyover will finally be opened for traffic in June, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials said.

The 650 meter long flyover will connect Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg in the east to Ramkrishna Chemburkar Marg in the west. The proposal for the flyover was first included in the BMC’s Development Plan (DP) regulations in 1991. The tenders for the project were floated in 2016 and construction work began thereafter. However, the project ran into several obstacles, causing repeated delays over the years.

“Currently, the work on the bridge is in full swing and the work on the eastern side of the bridge will be completed by February this year, while the completion target for the western side has been set for May 31, 2026. After which ancillary works will be carried out and we intend to complete the works by June this year,” an official said.

Currently, Vidyavihar has no direct east-west road connectivity. Motorists are forced to cross railway tracks using flyover bridges at Ghatkopar or Kurla, a journey that takes at least 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic conditions. Once operational, the new flyover is expected to reduce travel time to less than 10 minutes.

“The main reason behind the delay was that we had to remove more than 80 structures that were falling on the bridge alignment. In addition to this we had to carry out storm water drainage,” the official added.
The flyover is being constructed at a cost of Rs 178 crore. It will be 650 meters long and its beams will weigh 1,100 tons.
