Borivali Government Railway Police (GRP) has deployed a special team at platform number 1 of Malad railway station to identify and locate witnesses to the incident. stabbing of NM College professor Alok Kumar Singh last week.

Singh was stabbed by Omkar Shinde allegedly while getting off a local train at Malad station on January 24.

A GRP official said the team is using CCTV footage to trace travelers who were present at the spot at the time of the incident. “The police team is closely monitoring the people based on the CCTV footage so that we can record the statement of as many witnesses of the incident to strengthen the case,” the official said. “The team is especially looking for the women who were ahead of the victim on the local train, their statements are important to corroborate the incident.”

The police also recovered the weapon used in the attack, a clamp, outside the Malad (east) railway station. According to investigators, the accused threw him off the railway footbridge while fleeing after stabbing Singh.

“After several hours of searching, we finally found one outside the railway station in (east). Shinde will be produced in court on Friday after five days of police custody. We will most likely not seek further police custody as the interrogation has concluded and the gun has been recovered,” a senior GRP officer said. “Now our entire approach to record the statement of eyewitnesses and identification is underway, once the people are identified, we will ask them to give their statement,” the officer added.

During interrogation, Shinde, whom the police described as “hot-tempered” in nature, told investigators that he did not know that the professor had died at the time of his arrest as his only intention was to prick him with tweezers.
According to the police, two women were standing near the footboard of the Borivali-bound train, followed by Singh and a fellow teacher, while Shinde was behind them.

Shinde has claimed that when he tried to move forward, Singh pushed him and asked him if he couldn’t see that there were women ahead. The women looked back and Shinde allegedly felt humiliated, an officer involved in the investigation said.

Shinde then realized that he was carrying a clamp used for imitation jewelery work in the bag hanging in front of him. He removed the tweezers and decided to take revenge by pricking Singh and running away.

Police said Shinde stabbed Singh on the left side of the abdomen with a pliers while lighting up the Malad station. Singh suffered a wound almost five inches deep and started bleeding. While there was little blood visible externally, officials believe massive internal bleeding caused his death.
