With the fate of political parties and candidates sealed in the EVMs, all eyes are now on Friday when counting will begin at 10 am to meet the 165 corporators, including two unopposed, of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Vote counting is likely to continue late.
The counting of votes for the PMC elections has been decentralized and will be carried out at one center for each of the 15 district offices.
The civic administration has taken necessary steps for counting of votes. “It has been decided that the counting of votes for each sub-category of a ward will be done simultaneously. After the result of one ward is declared, the counting of the next ward will be carried out,” said Omprakash Divate, additional municipal commissioner of PMC.
There are 41 wards in PMC and four corporators will be elected from each of the 40 wards and five from one ward. Thus, the declaration of four winners of a ward will be made simultaneously.
First the electoral votes will be counted and then the GEV votes will be counted. The main dispute is between the BJP, which has fielded candidates for all 165 seats, and the alliance of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP with the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP).
The BJP had held power on its own during the previous five-year term from 2016 to 2022 after which the administrator was in control of the civic body due to the delay in civic polls after the Supreme Court suspended him over the reservation issue. The united NCP was then the main opposition party in the PMC as the BJP ended its 10-year rule from 2007 to 2017.
PMC 2017 results: percentage of seats by party
97: BJP
39: PNC
10: Shiv Sena
9: Cong
2: MNS
1: AIMIM
4: Others
162 total
