The main dispute is between the BJP, which has fielded candidates for all 165 seats, and the alliance of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP with the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP). The BJP had held power on its own in the previous five-year terms from 2017 to 2022, after which the Administrator was in control of the civic body due to a delay in the civic polls after the Supreme Court suspended him over the reservation issue. The United NCP was then the main opposition party in the PMC as the BJP ended its ten-year rule from 2007 to 2017.
